Date:  Easter Sunday, April 24th

Meeting Place:  Karekare Carpark

Time 10.30am

Bring:  Strong footwear, Lunch, Drink, Raincoat, Sunhat, etc

We will leave Karekare via the Pohutukawa Glade (from the parking area, cross the bridge and turn right) and make our way to Tunnel Point where we will have lunch, and hopefully meet the Easter Bunny.  The walk to Tunnel Point should take about an hour at a reasonably leisurely pace.  From there people and families can choose from a number of options.

1.  Return to Karekare via the beach, watching out for possible signtings of dotterels

2.  Continue southwards to view the amazing Whatipu wetlands with their unique plants and birds, and return via the beach

3.  Continue south viewing the wetlands on the way, then make your way up the Pararaha Valley and back to Karekare via Zion Ridge.  This is a more energetic route, needing at least four hours for the round trip, moderate fitness and plenty of puff to climb up out of the Pararaha.

So, all-in-all, an outing for everyone over about 5 years old,  and all levels of fitness.

Sunday Apr 4th 2010: Easter Outing & Treasure Hunt. Piha CoastCare is organizing a walk around the Mercer Bay Loop Tracks and to Karekare Beach.

We will be accompanied by plant guru Jeff McCauley who will tell us all about the vegetation we encounter, particularly the rare and endangered plants.  There are some very special examples in the areas we will visit.

The first stage of the trip will be the Mercer Bay Loop track.  this starts at the end of Log Race Road (a continuation of Te Ahu Ahu Road), and follows the coast with spectacular views over Piha and the Tasman Sea.  At Te Ahua Point there will be an Easter Egg hunt for the children, a general refreshment stop and the turn around point for those who wish to do only this section of the walk (approx one and a half hours walking plus time for photos, refreshments, listening to Jeff etc).

We will then take Comans Track down to Karekare Beach, returning via Ahu Ahu Track (about an extra two hours walking).  Again, more interesting plants to be found and explained, and lots of lovely views.

Easter 2010 Piha CoastCare Mercer Bay Loop Photos

Above:  Some 40 plus (some missed the photo) came on this CoastCare outing specifically designed to attract the Piha Children.  Not hard on Easter Weekend as we just arranged a 'Treasure Hunt' at the destination.  We were thrilled with the turnout.

Left: Jeff McCauley, CoastCare Trustee, (NZ Natives) joined us.  His knowledge on these outings is invaluable.
